INTRODUCTION
As a specialized agency of the United Nations, International Maritime Organization is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. Energy efficiency, new technology and innovation, maritime education and training, maritime security, maritime traffic management and the development of the maritime infrastructure.
Climate change has begun to affect the Arctic regions particularly in geopolitical and economic conditions. Global warming caused massive increases of polar ice melts which exposed the previously inaccessible Arctic regions to new trading routes. These new emerging routes seem to provide shorter shipping distance between countries and enhance commercial affairs. However these routes also come with challenges. The Arctic remains one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems, and increased maritime activity entails environmental risks, including oil spills, black carbon emissions, and harm to marine biodiversity.
